Layering Serums — The Right Order for Maximum Results
Share
Serums are the powerhouses of any skincare routine — but layering them incorrectly can cancel out their benefits entirely. Here's the Orrix guide to stacking actives like a pro.
The Golden Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
Always apply serums from the lightest consistency to the heaviest. This ensures each layer absorbs fully before the next is applied.
The Layering Framework
- Water-based serums first — Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or Vitamin C (water-based). These penetrate quickly and prep the skin.
- Targeted actives second — Retinol, peptides, or AHA/BHA treatments. Apply to clean, slightly damp skin for better absorption.
- Oil-based serums last — Facial oils or oil-based vitamin E serums go on top to seal in the layers beneath.
Combinations to Avoid
- Retinol + Vitamin C (can cause irritation — use on alternate nights)
- AHAs/BHAs + Retinol (over-exfoliation risk)
- Niacinamide + pure Vitamin C (can reduce efficacy — use separately)
Combinations That Work Beautifully
- Hyaluronic Acid + Niacinamide (hydration + barrier repair)
- Vitamin C + SPF (brightening + protection)
- Peptides + Ceramides (anti-aging + barrier strength)
Skincare is chemistry. When you understand how ingredients interact, you stop guessing and start glowing.
